Modern Warfare 2 - No Dedicated Servers. Are other developers going to follow suit?
November 11th 2009, 17:00 MSK by teenageriot Could this be the start of a new trend in order to try to squeeze more money out of the PC community? Although this recent announcement has sent shockwaves through the PC gaming community, I think the overall response has been rather mild. Currently the petition in favor of the Dedicated Servers holds little over 140,000 signatures, I'd imagine with changes as chocking as these we would stand together to prevent this from happening in the future. Again, with the new IWnet matchmaking system they are getting rid of the following: no more choosing what level you want to play no more connecting to a low ping games by choice no more clan matches no more mods no more custom maps no more filtering matches no more joining on to a game with all your mates no more high capacity matches (eg. 30/40/50 people in a match) no more benifits of playing online over the console version link to the petition link to article explaining the new matchmaking system What do you think? |

I'll be getting the PC version just because I don't give a shit about multiplayer. |
Yeah, as someone who has grown-up being a hardcore PC guy, I don't give a fuck about the outrage. I'd rather click a button or two, say what I want, and get put into a game. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"

BobJustBob (#5): It's nothing like Counterstrike. It was a LOT like CS in the last edition with different maps. I only played the PC version, so I don't know about the 360/PS3 versions, but almost everything about it felt CS. As has most every multiplayer on a modern setting FPS for a long time now. I don't know if I'll be getting this at all... I LOVED the first one, but I'm hearing things like 5 hours of gameplay...plus that scene that got leaked. Just don't have a real urge for it. I'll hold off and buy AC2. "I was content enough with the content they gave me." - Cheesy

Counterstrike was round-based where you sat out the round on death and had to buy your weapons every round. CoD4's multiplayer was essentially instaspawn, with choosable loadouts, not to mention the XP/perk/kill streak system. It sounds like your idea of "like Counterstrike" is "army dudes with army guns". |

And Counter-strike isn't even with army guys. "IT consultant of perfect lovemaking art."

So you instapawned back at your base instead of waiting a round... you're right, completely different. As for choosable load outs, that's bunk. You had to earn the extra stuff through play, kills, etc. Bahumbug. "I was content enough with the content they gave me." - Cheesy

Is it like Counter-strike in that any supposed objectives are completely belayed and it always turns into deathmatch? "IT consultant of perfect lovemaking art."

Yes, waiting five minutes to spawn along with everyone else is completely different from instaspawning alone. And you earned the extra stuff once, then it was unlocked forever. In CS you had to rebuy your weapons every round. BUYBUYBUY
I won't be playing this one, but not because of any pc server shenanigans. I played the first one, which was enjoyable mostly. Guns were shot, enemies respawned etc. It was good, but not great. I'm still playing far cry 2, torchlight and now borderlands, so I can afford to skip this one. |
Gunp01nt (#13): Is it like Counter-strike in that any supposed objectives are completely belayed and it always turns into deathmatch? Yes, this exactly. BobJustBob (#14): Yes, waiting five minutes to spawn along with everyone else is completely different from instaspawning alone. And you earned the extra stuff once, then it was unlocked forever. In CS you had to rebuy your weapons every round. Right...in one of them I had to earn the right to carry specific guns by killing hundreds of people. In the other, I had to kill two of them. So CS is superior in that way, but still pretty similar. "I was content enough with the content they gave me." - Cheesy

In one of them you're leveling up your persistent character, and in the other you're engaging in tedious busywork. CS sucked. They're not even remotely similar Matt. Give it up. BUYBUYBUY

CS is still one of the best, and fun, tactical FPS multiplayer games out there. Even though it's extremely dated now, I still go back and play it from time to time. BF2 replaced it for me with its large scale battles, vehicles and less focus on choke points and more on holding specific places on a larger map. But CS did not suck, sir, it did not. Maybe you sucked at it... "I was content enough with the content they gave me." - Cheesy

I'm on the Gamefly wagon again, for this month, so I'm going to try and get MW2 from them, but it's not likely. |
CS sucks about as much as WoW. Read it any way you want, they still have millions of players. Parhelic Triangle is coming.

#21 by Matt Perkins Love the new tagline. Tagline is still "THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!". Parhelic Triangle is coming.

In one of them you're leveling up your persistent character, and in the other you're engaging in tedious busywork. CS sucked. I cannot avoid responding to this obvious troll. The in-game "economy" aspects of CS are not tedious busywork, they are a mechanism to add "inertia" to a particular team's wins or losses and smooth out some of the random nature of the game on a team versus team level. From a gameplay perspective it adds another layer of strategic depth in terms of choices for losing teams to make. The real problem with CS is that the game is rarely played how it was intended (i.e. with stable, relatively evenly matched teams that cooperate and communicate well) except at an expert level, at which point the game becomes insanely boring. Ever watch professional CS tournaments? |

Then why did you preorder L4D? |

Because, unlike you, gaggle, he's not an effete, pretentious snob and actually enjoys playing games rather than navel-gaze over things he knows next to nothing about. "THE FUCKING KITTY LITTER FUCKING BOMB GHRHGURHGUHGRUGHRUGHURHGURHGHHGHUAHUHU KITTY" -- greg

Ever watch professional CS tournaments? Yeah, I agree completely with this. I still play it from time to time, but only for nostaglia sake. It was pretty good back in the day when I knew of a couple of servers that had good people trying to work as teams and was well moderated. So since the game unlocked on Steam, I'd just like to say that the matchmaking works awesomely and I'd much rather use this than deal with dedicated servers and idiot admins. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"
Also, holy fucking god the leveling in multiplayer is addictive. I never got into MP in the first COD because it blew on the PC, but this is great. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"

My first match I got a five-kill streak and the kill I got with that kill streak reward was the final kill of the match, so everyone got to watch the glorious replay of me smoking a dude with a remote-controlled missile. I got an award for having the highest k/d ratio (6/1) and an award for having the fewest deaths. Then I played about five more games and did horribly in them all, but still. That first game was pretty sweet. "CS is still one of the best, and fun, tactical FPS multiplayer games out there." -- Perkins

Wow, MW2 sold 4.7 million units on its first freaking DAY. |
Quadruple A games! Parhelic Triangle is coming.

Recession! |
lwf (#38): Recession! Proof! "Don't try to take cover by the legs of my walker. It will not go well for you." - Shadarr
lwf (#38): Recession! Tell me about it. I'm still plodding through Far Cry 2 (literally - I walk everywhere in that game, there are far too many guard posts and marauding Jeeps to do otherwise). |
I remember boating a bunch, and driving offroad to avoid the jeeps. Loved offroading and driving amongst a herd of animals. Good times. |
I still need to finish Dead Space. I'm at the final boss fight (at least I think it's the final one) and it's pretty tough. Still not used to the gamepad. Then I think I'll continue with Far Cry 2 as well. And of course in the mean time I've picked up Lego Star Wars 2 (Original trilogy) and PGR3 which I might never actually end up playing, but those were cheap so it's okay. I am reminded that I need to get back into Forza 3. MW2? meh. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I just finished the single player of MW2 and ohmygodohmygod. I never played Modern Warfare 1 and only really decided to play this one because I figured it was popular and as a game dev I should really be able to reference it. Oh my GOD, that was hands-down one of the best game experiences I've EVER had. I'm so glad I decided to play it. It's sad to me that people want to measure its worth by the quantity of hours. Those hours I spent with it this weekend were quality-wise far and above some of the 20-30 hour games I've played in the past. This surpassed its $60 price tag in quality, to me. I can't recall a single game that made me have literal lumps in my throat or nearly drop the controller with excitement, or nearly leap off the couch and shout "NOOOOOOOO!" because of storyline twists and excitement. I haven't even tried Spec Ops or MP yet. Gonna try at least MP tomorrow. Also, I have a serious crush on Soap MacTavish. |
Caryn - Soap is your main character in the first Modern Warfare. Suffice to say, I punched the air in celebration towards the end of MW2. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"

Slight MW2 spoilers... Yep, I finished the sp campaign recently too and thought it was tightly constructed, awesome, and completely devoid of filler. Just one set piece after another. A lot like Halo ODST, except even more so since they don't have the overworld stuff. Yes, it's completely over the top, like Michael Bay and Tom Clancy had a drunken love baby, but it really works. The airport scene for better or worse was amazing, and the very end was great, too. I was yelling at the TV, "Wait, I have a KNIFE! It's right THERE! COME ON!" and lo and behold... I'm going through getting the low hanging achievements and dabbling is Special Ops and multiplayer now. One other thing I really like about MW2 is that the none of the achievements are multiplayer-specific unless you want to count Special Ops. None of them requires you to get a certain rank in multiplayer or unlock a certain number of killstreak bonuses or anything. I guess they thought the ranks and unlocks were their own achievements. As someone who promptly got his ass handed to himself in multiplayer, I appreciate this. Caryn, if you or anyone else wants some coop help on the Special Ops stuff, let me know if you see me online. |
Also, Caryn, you should go back and play COD4 (a.k.a., MW1). Its single player campaign was also really good. |
Drats. The first one didn't really grab me at all (apart from the C130 level), so if they're samey it probably spells doom upon my enjoyment of MW2. Whenever I might get to it. |
gaggle, MW2 is significantly better than CoD4. I didn't like that one either and this one is great. "CS is still one of the best, and fun, tactical FPS multiplayer games out there." -- Perkins

Thinking... |
I liked MW1 a little better at first, as the opening missions in MW2 are a little bleh. Especially South America. But once you're past that, it's fucking ace. |
Tried both MP and Spec Ops today. Loved both. Matt and I played some split screen Spec Ops (Jamie, if you ever want to do co-op Spec Ops we should give it a try sometime) and that was really fun. But I'm HOOKED on MP. Didn't think I'd like it at all but now I'm addicted. I've been playing it all day with breaks to eat, do laundry, and feed the alpacas. I'm around level 12 or so now, I think. |
Are you playing on the PC or the 360, Caryn? Also, do you go back and play MW1, it's good stuff. The best single player experience I've had in an FPS. (I haven't played MW2 yet) "Fucking Radio Shack. It's a wonder they even know how to use a bathroom and don't just walk around all day with shit in their pants." - smds

I'm playing on the 360. |
