ok, what the heck...

I'll miss the whole sordid affair. I've changed considerably since I first started posting here in '99. Some of the people who have posted here long term have had a profound influence in shaping my political and religious beliefs over the years. I now hold the belief that if our personal views are never challenged, we would never see the weaknesses that accompany our often ill formed ideologies. People like Hugin, Bailey, Warren Marshall and many others have all taught me something about life, games, politics and religion over the years. In retrospect, I never thought that a site called "PlanetCrap" would have impacted me this much, but it has.

If the plug is actually going to be pulled on Planetcrap, I'd like to thank Morn for all of the effort he has put in over the years.

What will I miss the most?

Discussing Games.

'Nuff said.

I saw on Twitter that it is their 10th birthday today and I thought of PC. I remember the discussions back then that Twitter was dumb, yet m0nty was the early adopter singing its praises. Good times?

Twitter is terrible. Particularly when people write long form articles on it, with numbers on them so that you can reassemble it into a semi-coherent form.

Anyway, my fondest memories are jetski vs table (table!), the minecraft server (Still have a copy of the world), and PenguinX sending us totally legal DVDs with archival copies of ROM-type data.

I'm kind of sad at having missed out on the Minecraft server.  I've never played the game but it's exactly the sort of thing I'd have spent weeks and months and probably years at.

Also, Jetski.

Jetski.

Actually yeah that minecraft server was pretty sweet. Minecraft doesn't do it for me but that was the closest I had to fun with it (and all I did was make a big hole). I really liked the big overview pictures someone generated.. who was that?

Okay, rare nostalgia time!

One of my favorite PC moments was chatting with JJ, meeting his wife and kids, and drinking delicious Oreo milkshakes she made. And somehow I've always remembered Caryn finally making me understand that I need to communicate clearly when writing. Or the time I met Chunky for drinks. And when.. shit, I forget her handle, but she passed through Iceland and stayed in my apartment. Penguin was always great. Dum's amazing comics. People respecting my tastes in movies and games.

Okay one of those didn't happen. But you're all nice people*. Hope everyone's doing well, wherever you are.

Jetski got tired fairly quick. SUMAS!

I liked the Ambien posts from... was it Ryslin?
Jeet's alts, like the Self Immolating Dictionary.
Dum's comics and the MP3otW, fo sho'.
The ongoing games blogging in the thread, mostly kept alive by BJB and Squeaky, I think?

And twitter is not entirely terrible. There's an awful lot of rubbish there, the character limit was an asinine gimmick from the getgo, and it deserves derision for making "hashtag" a thing... but if you use it judiciously, it can serve as a more convenient RSS tool. (And .plan replacement, in the case of JC.)

Twitter is awful. I used it to keep up with local politics until last week, when I realised politics in Scotland (and probably everywhere else) is fucking awful and bitter and poisonous and miserable. Now I just read about motorcycles and space exploration and bands I like.

I will always remember excitedly reading stuff posted by ACTUAL GAME DEVELOPERS way back when I was still lurking. And my tree fortress on the Minecraft server. Apparently Minecraft now has combat that's more than just clicky clicky.

Microsoft creates naive AI chatbot and Twitter users teach it to spout hatred within a day. Twitter and the people on it are awful.

I guess the most fitting end to PC is that morn just forgets to turn it off.

What I loved most about PC is there was lots of talk about games I liked. Nowadays I still visit BF but the game talk is probably not even the most interesting part of it.

Him and his government annulled so many things the previous government set up that I have zero hurt feelings for this shit he got himself into. He's always seemed a poor leader, serving his own interests (building a hugely expensive road no one wanted that just happens to go past some land of his uncle's) and pandering to lowest denominators (tax breaks on cars and tvs but increase taxes on vegetables and cut funding on established environmental projects). Definitely doesn't wish I was there now.
